Diamond Living Hinge Generator

Pro

Create living hinges made of elongated diamonds in a brick-wall offset. Each diamond is a closed outline of four edges; the rows are shifted by half a pitch so the tips of one row reach between the diamonds of the next – slim, evenly flexible, and decorative in rigid material such as wood, acrylic, or MDF. Export your design as SVG, DXF or PDF for your CNC router or laser cutter.

Diamond Pattern

Elongated diamonds as closed outlines in a brick-wall offset – the diamond counterpart to the hexagon pattern with a slimmer, calmer look.

Parametric

Adjust plate size, diamond length and width, and both gaps. The generator checks that no outlines intersect and shows changes instantly in the preview.

Diamond Hinge Tips

  • Material Thickness: Living hinges work best with thin materials (3–6 mm). The thinner the material, the more flexible the result.
  • Row Spacing: A smaller vertical gap puts more rows across the bend zone and makes the hinge more flexible. The tips of the offset row move between the diamonds – the generator keeps the minimum clearance.
  • Gap in the Row: The horizontal gap between diamond tips is the load-bearing bridge. Below 3 mm it becomes brittle quickly in wood.
  • Material: Plywood and MDF work particularly well. Acrylic can crack if the cuts are too tight.
  • Test Cut: Make a small test piece first to find the optimal parameters for your material.

Application Examples

Lampshades

Cylindrical lamps where the diamond pattern acts as a fine light grid.

Decorative Objects

Vase sleeves, lanterns, and wall pieces with an even, decorative diamond look.

Book Covers

Flexible spines with a calm pattern – the closed outlines keep the surface stable.

Jewelry Boxes

Boxes with curved lids made from a single piece – no separate hinges required.
